DIY Bird Cake Topper

Posted by blue | DIY Projects | Wednesday 18 November 2009 1:56 pm

First of all I have to thank my sister, Julie, for all of you who have stopped by to say hi from her blog.  And thanks to all of you for your support! I had no idea my big sis was so popular…I would have never guessed it growing up with her! hee hee.   But I have always looked up to her and she has taught me many things.  Thanks Julie! utah wedding blog, utah bridal blog that does really cute diy projects for brides in utah!

Here is the post I promised yesterday about how to make a diy bird cake topper.  For all of Julie’s friends–I’ll have you know that she wanted birds on her cake.  Infact I think she even had birds on her cake.  I really can’t remember.  I just remember going to store after store looking for them!  Married for 12 some odd years  and didn’t even know she was setting trends!Utah wedding blog, Utah bridal blog that does really cute diy projects for brides in Utah!

All of my supplies were bought at Dollar Tree.  The total cost of this project is right around $3.  Pretty impressive!

Here are all the supplies you will need.  I bought them all at Dollar Tree.  The birds were Christmas Ornaments so they might be a seasonal item.

utah-wedding-blog21

You will need to make a royal icing.  Mine was 2 egg whites to 3 cups powdered sugar and then mix well.  I would suggest making it with more sugar so that it is stiffer and isn’t as runny.

utah-wedding-blog22

Place your wreath on the center of your iced Styrofoam.

utah-wedding-blog23

I think if I was better at icing this might have been cuter, but I basically just globed on a little pile of icing so that one bird could be up a little higher.

utah-wedding-blog24

The ornament hanger simply popped out when I pulled on it.  Then I put the birds on my icing piles.

utah-wedding-blog25

Put it on top of your cake.

Julie sent me! Wow, what beeyootiful ideas you have.
I have a soft spot in my heart for wedding photographers–my dear Dad was one! It was my job when I was little to help him pore over the 8×10s of brides bedecked in macrame and daisies (hey, it was the early 70s) and help him retouch all the tiny blemishes and spots on the film. Yes, we had to do that back then. I would help him mix the tints to fix them! Thanks for the walk down memory lane! have a great day, and best wishes for Blue Light Photography!

I am so glad to see all these DIY and less expensive ways to have a beautiful wedding. It has become downright ridiculous how much people spend on these events. Kind of like Christmas, the real reason for the day often gets lost.

  100. Comment by Nancy Grant — November 18, 2009 @ 9:55 pm

OOOO… this would of been perfect for our wedding. My husband and I met an married in the arctic and this reminds of snowbirds. Me and my sisters were referred to as snowbirds when we were little and this topper is perfect! I know this might not make sense to you but I think this would of been simply perfect for our cake. :-)

In any case, we’ve been married now for almost six years and our cake was beautiful none the less.

    Lovely website.

    Smiles,
    Nancy Grant

    Hi Becky,

You and Julie sound like my sister and I. I loved reading Julie’s story about the shoes and so forth. My sister and I have done a lot of things like that through the years.

Your blog is simply amazing. BOY weddings sure have changed…since I was married back in 94, they are so much FUN now! The white birdie cake topper is so very pretty, elegant and it has simplicity to it, that is just perfect.

I enjoyed reading many of your other posts and loved the wood card idea. I can’t believe you can use a paper punch for that thin wood. What a CLEVER idea!

I also chuckled at your post about your BIG sister…too cute. You both sound like you have such a wonderful relationship. Have a great week!

    Toodles,
    ~Tonya
