DIY pie, I don’t know about you but I’m still loving left over pie!

Posted by blue | inspiration | Monday 30 November 2009 9:29 pm

As you can tell from my absence from my lovely blog that I had a really great Thanksgiving!  And one of my favorite parts of Thanksgiving is pie!  I love it, and I always save room for it.  My husband never saves room for dessert and it baffels me.  It’s not like pie on Thanksgiving is a surprise.  Just writing about pie makes me want to get up and grab a slice.  I did have a pie bake off with my sister-in-law this year and if I do say so myself I make a pretty tasty pie crust!  I decided to share my recipe in case reading this post made you feel like eating pie too!

Pie Crust

2 cups flour

1 cup shortening

1/2 cup water

2 teaspoons salt

and for you math wizards out there that’s twice as much flour as shortening, twice as much shortening as water, and as many teaspoons salt as you have cups flour… It’s an easy recipe to double.

To bridezella or not bridezella?

Posted by blue | Uncategorized | Tuesday 24 November 2009 12:03 pm

One of the hardest parts of my actual wedding day was being appreciative of all the hard work and nice things my family and friends were doing for me.  It’s your day right?  The one day you have been planning all your life.  And of course you do deserve to have it be a perfect day for you, well kind of.  I can’t think of a family that wouldn’t want to give their bride a perfect day, but I also can’t think of a family that could actually pull it off!  My mom was amazing and spent countless hours of time making my cake and flowers.  And while I love my bouquet and the time my mom spent on it, it looked nothing like the one in Martha Stewart that I showed her.  The cake while beautiful, soon had smear marks in it from where my new nieces and nephews sampled the frosting for me.   My hair, done by friend of my mom, wasn’t exactly like I dreamed.  I wanted big barrel curls piled on top of my head and at one point she said, “My grandma always had me do her hair like this.”  And when she was done I kinda felt like I looked like her grandma.  And while it might not have been what I really wanted, I remember thinking it was so nice of her to get up at six in the morning and do my hair.  I even remember being slightly annoyed that my husband felt sick–like he could help that?  Looking back on my wedding day,  I feel great love for the work my family did for me.  I’d rather have the bouquet my mom made me than an expensive one from the store.  It means more.  I look back at the little things I said or thought that were critical and I feel great remorse for any feelings I might have hurt.  Weddings are a celebration of two families coming together.  And that is beautiful.  I would highly suggest trying not to be a Bridezella, but  if you are going to be a Bridezella at least take some awesome photos.  I love the ones down bellow. brought to you by blue light bride a bridal blog for every utah wedding

I’m game! Sweet engagement shots with Scrabble!

Posted by blue | Uncategorized | Monday 23 November 2009 10:21 am

I had a friend of mine propose with Scrabble tiles.  I thought it was sweet since they loved playing Scrabble together.  It’s so cute when couples express there personalities with their engagement photos.  Scrabble was a great choice to use since you can spell out your names or your wedding date.  Making this a perfect photo to send out with your save the date invitations. utah wedding blog, utah bride blog, utah wedding ideas, a blog for utah brides and grooms, cute engagement ideas, cute locations for utah engagements, cute props to use

Local Utah wedding with tons of DIY details.

I’m so glad that I stumbled upon this Wedding.  Judy the bride had a great eye for details and did a lot of them by hand.   Judy’s friend Chantry Adams arranged all her flowers and Judy wrapped her bouquet with ribbon and attached a pin that belonged to her grandmother.  Her cute little tea length dress was hand-made and commissioned from a local dress maker.   Instead of a DJ the couple had music playing via i-tunes hooked up to a computer w/ speakers, and guests could request songs by using an i-tunes application.  Judy also used recycled jars and vintage vases for their centerpieces.  And, as you can tell from my previous post, I loved their cookie cake made by dough girl.  The rest of the food was made by family and friends.   The bride is a designer and the groom a photographer…they were brilliant in all of their planning, including their orange and antique teal color scheme, and also leaving lots of time for doing unique photos…All of these photo were taken by the amazing Karen at Brown Mouse  Photography.

DIY Bird Cake Topper

Posted by blue | DIY Projects | Wednesday 18 November 2009 1:56 pm

First of all I have to thank my sister, Julie, for all of you who have stopped by to say hi from her blog.  And thanks to all of you for your support! I had no idea my big sis was so popular…I would have never guessed it growing up with her! hee hee.   But I have always looked up to her and she has taught me many things.  Thanks Julie! utah wedding blog, utah bridal blog that does really cute diy projects for brides in utah!

Here is the post I promised yesterday about how to make a diy bird cake topper.  For all of Julie’s friends–I’ll have you know that she wanted birds on her cake.  Infact I think she even had birds on her cake.  I really can’t remember.  I just remember going to store after store looking for them!  Married for 12 some odd years  and didn’t even know she was setting trends!Utah wedding blog, Utah bridal blog that does really cute diy projects for brides in Utah!

All of my supplies were bought at Dollar Tree.  The total cost of this project is right around $3.  Pretty impressive!

Here are all the supplies you will need.  I bought them all at Dollar Tree.  The birds were Christmas Ornaments so they might be a seasonal item.

You will need to make a royal icing.  Mine was 2 egg whites to 3 cups powdered sugar and then mix well.  I would suggest making it with more sugar so that it is stiffer and isn’t as runny.

Place your wreath on the center of your iced Styrofoam.

I think if I was better at icing this might have been cuter, but I basically just globed on a little pile of icing so that one bird could be up a little higher.

The ornament hanger simply popped out when I pulled on it.  Then I put the birds on my icing piles.

Put it on top of your cake.

Getting married in a cultural hall? Embrace it!

Posted by blue | inspiration | Friday 13 November 2009 12:57 pm

Having a reception in a cultural hall this winter?  Don’t be embarrassed–embrace it!  So instead of a faux ceiling hiding the basketball hoop, why not take photos in front of it? Great and fun photos can be taken anywhere.  And necessity brings out some of the best creativity.  If you have a fun cultural hall wedding feel free to email me here info (at) blue light bride (dot) com.

More Cute Utah Weddings: Opie Photography!

Posted by blue | Local Vendors, Uncategorized | Wednesday 11 November 2009 11:04 pm

Ok, I must say that I love Opie photography.  Not only is she an awesome photographer but she really gets to know her clients and connects with them.  It actually makes my job a lot easier, because she posts the couples’ story on her blog along with where they booked all the details for their wedding.  I wish I had photographs of this, because Michael proposed in the cutest way.  Opie said this about it on her blog, “Mike likes to draw. He drew a series of pictures that illustrated their sordid affair and had them bound in hardcover as childrens’ book. The last page was him, on one knee, proposing.”  I have to say, Vanessa–he’s a keeper!

My favorite wedding details include:

button bouquet and button boutonniere

cookie buffet (made by mom and aunts, but you could use Dough Girl-gotta give the advertisers their plug!)

my favorite part–The Milk Bar–classic!

Bitchin’ Wedding Party Mix 2009, by Mike on iPod

oh, and as party favors, guests were able to take home cookies and milk!

Love the bouquet!  My sister told me you could buy bags of buttons at the DI in Provo.  She said that whenever clothing is too old to sell they strip the buttons and sell them.  I tried my Dessert Industries in Salt Lake City and they didn’t have any. If anybody knows for sure let me know.  I’m just trying to help!

Budget Photo Booth: DIY Projects for Weddings

Posted by blue | DIY Projects | Wednesday 11 November 2009 10:20 am

Think you can’t afford $2000 for a photo booth?  Well, you don’t need to.  Make your own.  Take some cute fabric–Ikea has some really cute fabrics right now.  And make a frame or drape over a fence.  As you can see these guys just used a frame work of tree branches.  But you could even just tie a string between a couple trees in your back yard.  Or if you are getting married this winter and are having a cultural hall wedding you could tie it from the basketball hoop…you think I’m kidding but I’m totally not!  Have a cute little niece or roommate take the photos with your digital camera.  Send guests their photos when you send out your thank you cards or make the photos themselves into post cards.  I know Knicoles Lab in Salt Lake can print your photos on post cards for you.  It’s a fun way to have great photos at your wedding!
